I graduated as an Occupational Therapist with an Honours Degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of Cape Town in 2006.
Following my graduation I completed my one year community service at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. I then continued to work at Red Cross for the next four years. I developed a passion for children who had suffered a burn injury and spent five years in the burns unit, working with children in the acute and the rehabilitation phases of treatment. In addition to working in the burns unit, I was involved in treating patients in the Intensive Care Unit, the Tracheostomy Ward as well as in the Out-Patient OT Clinic.
In April 2011 I became a mother to my son, Elijah and 16 months later, in August 2012, my daughter Shiloh was born. I worked part time in the burns unit at Red Cross in between the birth of my two children. I then took a break from work to focus on being a mom.
I found that I most enjoyed journeying alongside children and their caregivers who need assistance with emotional development in order to prepare them for life’s challenges.
In 2014 I took up the opportunity to work for Kidzpositive, an NGO based at Victoria Hospital in Wynberg. My role as an OT in the NGO was to assess and treat all paediatric patients with HIV/AIDS and provide support and education to their caregivers. The NGO sadly closed its doors in October 2016, however, I remained employed by the Victoria Hospital’s Facilities Board which utilized funding set aside for the paediatric department until January 2023. My role expanded to assessing and treating a wide range of paediatric conditions including: Autism, Cerebral Palsy, ADHD/ADD, Williams Syndrome, Okamota Syndrome, Learning Difficulties, Developmental Delays, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Amputations, Autism, and Anxiety.
In 2018 and 2019 I completed the Gestalt Play Therapy training through The Red Shoe Centre. I began wearing two hats during my treatment sessions – one as an occupational therapist and one as a play therapist and found that I most enjoyed journeying alongside children and their caregivers who need assistance with emotional development in order to prepare them for life’s challenges. Furthermore, another passion and unique skill set of mine is equipping children with a body or facial difference (burns, scars, birthmarks, cleft lips/palates, hemiplegia’s, amputations) with the skills they need to thrive in their environment (home, schools, hospitals etc).
I look forward to collaborating with children, caregivers, siblings and teachers to bring about positive changes in the lives of the families who come through my door.
